EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE COURSE LANDAISE
The Course Landaise is one of the four bullfights practised in the world, a tradition that dates back to the 15th century in the southwest. Unlike the Spanish bullfight, there is no killing of the animal. Here, it is the love of the cows that takes precedence! Here is what you need to know about the "toreros", "spreaders" and "jumpers" who put on the show in the arena!
THE RACING COW, THE REAL STAR OF THE ARENA
The Landes cows are real racehorses, bred from fighting bulls (ganaderias). Selected for its bravery and nobility, the Landes cow enters the arena at the age of 3 and remains in the ring for about ten years. Each year, the Golden Horn trophy is awarded to the best runner of the temporada (bullfighting season).
THE RIDER
He is the one who challenges the cow! He can be recognised by his white trousers and his shimmering bolero with gold or silver sequins. He stands in the middle of the arena and calls the cow. When the animal is galloped off, the spreader has to "swerve" at the last moment to dodge the charge. The coursayre (bullfighter) turns on himself to let the cow pass through his loins.
THE JUMPER
The jumper is, with the spacer, one of the two bullfighters of the Landes race. A good jumper is above all an accomplished gymnast. His mission? To avoid the cow by jumping over it! There are different types of jumps: running jumps, angel jumps, somersaults, twisted somersaults, etc. The most spectacular acrobatic figure is the "feet in the beret" jump. The bullfighter has to jump with his feet together, without any momentum, 1.5m above the horns of the bullfighter!
THE MEN IN WHITE
The "men in white" are essential to the smooth running of the Landes race. Starting with the trainer, who places the cow and directs it towards the centre of the ring where the spreader or jumper stands. The tailor (or rope keeper) guides the cow with the rope tied around the horns. He also has to hold back the bullfighter if the bullfighter falls to the ground. Finally, the "second" is in charge of attracting the cow by waving his handkerchief when the bullfighter has made his deviation, so that the animal does not turn on the spreader.
