All the things to do at Hossegor lake

Published on 22/01/2024

Visiting Hossegor during your holiday in the south of the Landes? Between the pine forest and the ocean, discover the marine lake of Hossegor, a lake that is constantly in motion... to the rhythm of the tides and outdoor activities! What to do and see around this jewel of the Côte d'Argent? Follow the guide!

Swimming on the lake's beaches

Looking for a family beach in Hossegor where the kids can have fun in complete safety? Close to the town centre and all its entertainment, Lac d'Hossegor offers a number of pretty beaches perfect for families, sheltered from the waves and wind. There are four supervised beaches to choose from: Plage des Chênes-Lièges (south-west), Plage Blanche (west bank), Plage du Rey (north-east) and Plage du Parc (south-east). All are easy to get to, with parking facilities and great spots for picnics in the shade of the pine trees.

Practise your favourite water sport: paddle, canoe, pirogue...

Lake Hossegor, 2,300 metres long and 300 metres wide, is a little corner of paradise where water sports are king: catamaran, dinghy, windsurf, paddle, canoe, pedalo... The calm waters of the lake lend themselves particularly well to paddle sports such as stand-up paddle, Hawaiian pirogue and canoe-kayak. Several sailing clubs and schools are available for lessons and equipment hire.

Taste oysters in the cabins

A remnant of the ancient Adour estuary, the Hossegor marine lake is fed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is therefore subject to the tides. This particularity means that the oysters bred here are subtly iodised. Less well known than their Arcachon neighbours, Hossegor oysters have a nutty flavour that is sure to please connoisseurs. You can buy them or taste them on the spot. Oyster farmers welcome you to their lakeside huts.

Walk around the lake

You can walk around Hossegor lake. The lakeside promenade, about 7 km long and reserved for pedestrians, is dotted with information panels telling walkers all about the history of the town and its flora and fauna. Beautiful Basque-Landes villas are tucked away among the pines, cork oaks, arbutus and mimosas. Halfway along the route, linger in the lakeside cabins for a taste of Hossegor's delicious oysters. Start and finish point: Parc Rosny beach. Allow around 2h30 for the walk.

Cross Lake Hossegor (the Coureurs d'écume trophy)

It's become a not-to-be-missed summer event on Lac d'Hossegor for locals, holidaymakers, experienced swimmers and children alike: the Hossegor swim across the lake! On the programme: a 1,000-metre swim open to all (no ranking) and the 2km swim across the lake and canal of Hossegor (Coureurs d'écume trophy). Safety supervision will be provided by members of Hossegor sauvetage côtier. Registration on Plage du Parc or on the organisers' website.
