Messanges beach, 50 shades of blue and green

Published on 05/06/2023

On the Landes coastline, Messanges, a little pearl on the Côte d'Argent, has become a must-see destination for beach and bathing enthusiasts over the years. But what makes this beach so special to holidaymakers?

A day on the beach at Messanges

If you're looking for a beach that's still wild, untouched by construction, with no traffic, no shops... and just a beach restaurant on the dune, Messanges is the place to go, on the Plage Nord and the Plage Sud! Nestling between Vieux-Boucau and Moliets, this large wild beach, bordered by the Landes forest, is a real paradise if you're looking for nature, peace and quiet and the ocean. As soon as you set foot on the beach, behind the dune, you'll know straight away that you've found the perfect place to get out the cooler, set up the parasol and spread out your towel.

Messanges beach is 50 shades of blue and green ready to welcome you: 5 km of fine sandy beach bordered by 3,400 hectares of pine forests. This heavenly setting has earned it regular rankings as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Landes region. And it has to be said that it has plenty to offer. The beach is clean and well-maintained, and stretches as far as the eye can see. Swimming is supervised in summer by Landes lifeguards, making it an ideal family beach for children.

Messanges North Beach

Located 1.5 km from the centre of the resort, the Plage Nord is the main beach in Messanges, as it is easy to get to. From the town of Messanges, follow the D82 to reach this ocean beach. Free parking is available at the foot of the dune. To reach the beach, take a wooden staircase down to the ocean.

A surf school offers surf, bodyboard and stand-up paddle lessons for all ages and abilities. On the practical side, toilets and showers are available at the top of the dune, ensuring your comfort throughout the day. For those who've forgotten the cool box, the La Plage restaurant offers home-cooked food and refreshments before or after the beach.

La Plage Sud in Messanges

The Plage Sud is located around 4 km from the centre of Messanges. It can be reached by taking the D652, then the "route de la Plage Sud". There is a car park close to the beach. You then have to walk a few hundred metres along a footpath. Yes, beauty has to be earned! If you're staying at Le Vieux Port campsite, there's no need to take the car, bike or walk far to go swimming: we have direct access to the beach! Just get out of your mobile home or tent, take a few steps, hit the beach and put down your towel - that's what holidays are all about!

Well-equipped, Plage Sud de Messanges enjoys a privileged natural setting between ocean and forest. The beach has kept its wild and authentic aspect. There are surf, wave ski, stand-up paddle and Hawaiian pirogue schools, and equipment can be hired.

Good to know:

- Safety: to enjoy the beach in complete peace of mind, use the supervised swimming area, indicated by two-coloured yellow and red flags. The beach is supervised every day in July and August, from 10am to 7pm.
- Dogs allowed: dogs are allowed on the beach at Messanges, provided they are kept on a lead.
- Naturism: it is also possible to sunbathe without clothing by leaving the main area. Naturism is tolerated at the ends of the beach (particularly near Vieux-Boucau).
- Summer shuttles: in July and August, a free shuttle service runs to the beaches of Moliets, Messanges, Vieux-Boucau and Soustons.
