Our tips for a weekend in Capbreton

Published on 14/03/2023

Do you love the Landes and the Basque Country and are you planning to spend a weekend in Capbreton? Here are our tips for visiting "the town of a hundred captains" in 48 hours!

DAY 1

For those looking to soak up the local atmosphere, two days are enough to get the pulse of the Landes port city. On Saturday morning, head for Hossegor, the town next to Capbreton. Only the port of Capbreton separates them. Its market is a must to start the weekend by immersing yourself in the heart of the local culture. Under the market halls and outside, there is a rush to the stalls: oysters, fish, poultry, delicatessen, meat, cheese and sandy wines. Feeling peckish after the market? Stop at the Bodega Tap Tap, a friendly and no-fuss stopover after the market. The welcome is warm and the tapas are excellent.

In the afternoon, discover the seaside resort of Capbreton through the narrow streets also known as "balènes". The Grand'Rue contains some charming half-timbered houses, known as "Maisons des Anglais", inherited from the Middle Ages. A little further on, the Maison de l'Oralité et du Patrimoine (MOP), a must-see to discover the history of Capbreton, the local heritage and the personalities who have left their mark on the port city. Equally remarkable is the "Maison du Rey", at the corner of Avenue Jean Lartigau and Rue du Prieuré, a medieval building where Henri IV slept during his visit to Capbreton in 1583.

DAY 2

On the second day, get up early and head for the fishing port of Capbreton, the only port in the Landes. It is the only fishing port in the Landes, where small-scale fishing is practised, mainly with nets. At the foot of the harbour office, the fish market always attracts many people. The fishermen offer you their catch of the day: tuna, sea bass, hake, bonito, sole, dab. To find fresher fish, you have to go and catch it yourself!

Continue your walk to the Capbreton Ice Bridge, a link between the mainland and the ocean. Built by decision of Napoleon III in 1858, the Estacade is a popular place to walk for locals and tourists alike, with a beautiful view of the Pyrenees on a clear day. Later in the afternoon, head for the Central beach, a beautiful beach in the city centre for sunbathing and playing in the waves or surfing, or for the Santocha beach dotted with the blockhouses of the Second World War. At the end of the day, return to the Estacade to watch a magnificent sunset over the ocean.

- Capbreton fish market, quai Georges Pompidou, open 7 days a week, all year round, from 8am to 12pm and from 3pm to 6pm.
